Leading Engineering Firm Praises LCI's Pioneering Work

April 30, 2002

“The Lean Construction Institute (LCI), and its global counterpart [International Group for Lean Construction, (IGLC)], do some exceptional work. Solid, practical and yet pioneering. The IGLC is doing perhaps some of the top work in the industry. I have pressed other groups such as CII, CERF and FIATECH to get on board and press for the US industry to align behind its precepts.

I hesitate to imagine what LCI could do if the industry were to fully understand its direction and contribute much more strongly to its progress by joining the group. There are certain topics that only LCI is addressing in our industry and this needs to be nurtured and expanded as much as possible.”

John G. Voeller, Senior Vice President, Chief Knowledge Officer, Chief Technology Officer, Black & Veatch, Overland Park, Kansas, recipient of ENR’s Award of Excellence for Most Significant Individual Achievement in the Construction Industry, 1998

LCI Inspires Software Developer

March 14, 2002

A recent Lean Construction Institute seminar attracted an atypical participant, Mary Poppendieck, managing director of AgileAlliance, a consulting company specializing in team leadership and project management. Poppendieck’s astute observations on the parallels between Lean Construction Practices and software development can be found at www.poppendieck.com/construction.htm and are both interesting and insightful. Take a moment to read this perspective on the construction industry and the benefits inherent in the Lean Construction Institute approach to project planning.

Lean Users Speak Up

Results from using the Last Planner System

MT Højgaard – the largest Danish Construction Company – has applied the Last Planner System on more than 25 building projects during the last two years. Even though these projects have varied substantially with respect to, say, size, type of project (refurbishment / new buildings) and final use (housing, hotels, office buildings, industrial buildings etc), the result is the same: The Last Planner System improves the building process and hence the overall result.

Some of the benefits of using the Last Planner System compared with traditional approaches to planning are reduction in costs, projects that are on or ahead of schedule, and a shorter punch list. However, the most significant improvement seems to relate to a lower accident frequency and severity. For the first half year of 2002, the accident frequency is one-third for projects using the Last Planner System compared with projects managed by traditional planning methods. This difference is statistically significant.

Regards,
MT Højgaard a/s
