What is Broken? Why are we here talking about and hopefully learning about Integrated Project Delivery?

  •  Continued Litigation as a result of uncoordinated documents and errors or omissions
  • New Technology (2D vs. 3D) requires new organizational strategies in both design and document production
  • Improved Schedule and Budget Control and Discipline – both in Design and Construction
  • How can we add more value for our Customers with an Integrated Project Delivery Process?

How does an IPD solve the issues confronted in the delivering Professional Design Services

  •  Increased Technical Complexity – Required Increased Specialized Design Input
  • Traditional approaches divide work into chunks that create silos and do not allow for systems integration and optimization
  • As projects have become more complex, speed of delivery has increased

Basic IPD Concepts – Presented

1. Commercial Terms - Traditional Contract Forms vs.  Relational Contract Forms – AIA C 191, 195 Consensus Docs. 300 & 305

2. Organization – “Culture Change”

People must be willing to learn – that is, think and work differently. Leaders must be willing to risk change

3. Operating System – Technology – Both BIM and Lean - Process Management. Processes must be made transparent to all and a collaborative environment established either in real time or virtually.

What are the obstacles to overcome the challenges of a shifting away from the traditional siloed approach to an Integrated project delivery approach implementing and delivering today’s Professional Design Services?

Finally, What does success look like?
