Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) Workshop
Despite advances in technology, capital projects frequently suffer from adversarial relationships, lack of innovation, low rates of productivity, high rates of inefficiency and rework, and frequent disputes. These problems result in projects that cost too much and take too long to build. Projects also continue to injure or kill too many workers, and owners are often dissatisfied with the experience and the quality of the end-product.
In the past 20 years, Lean Design & Construction and Integrated Project Delivery have emerged in combination as a structured approach to counteract these basic problems. This project delivery system creates a new approach to team selection and integration, a new risk-reward contracting structure, and new work methods – both during design and construction. Projects delivered in this way bring together lean thinking, innovation, and deep collaboration to drive value into projects while eliminating waste and improving quality and safety.
This workshop, through simulations, case studies, and group discussion, will highlight the primary facets of lean and IPD, including team selection and on-boarding, collaborative contracting, target value design, lean production planning, and Built-in Quality.
Venue: This event will be hosted at the GM Heritage Center. A place to showcase the vehicles of the GM Heritage Collection which includes over 600 cars and trucks highlighting innovations, concept cars, and industry firsts from throughout GM’s history.
Participants will learn how IPD contracts differ from conventional contracts used for design and construction. They will gain a deeper understanding of relational contracting concepts which are at the core of the IPD framework and how those contracts are designed to manage risk and align the interests of all participants so that their focus is on the success of the project as a whole.
Will Lichtig is a nationally recognized leader in Lean and IPD, and one of the originators of the concept as we know it today. As an attorney for Sutter Health, he authored the early versions of their IPD contracts in which he successfully integrated for the first time the concepts of relational contracting, risk and reward models, and Lean thinking to align the interests of the various project participants around the overall success of the project. Since then, he has joined the Boldt Company as an executive vice president.
