The design phases of building construction projects deliver value in different ways than the construction phases. The Last Planner System® (LPS®) requires users to understand their value creation and select milestones and create workflows that release work reliably. This presentation will focus on the unique ways that design creates value and new thoughts on how the LPS can be structured in design to release work reliably for contractors, trade partners, other designers and ultimately, the Owner.

Learning Objectives:

  1. An understanding of some of the new concepts for planning the design phase of construction projects as described in the 2020 Current Process Benchmark for the Last Planner System of Project Planning and Control.
  2. An overview of the process involved in the Ideation phase of design exploring how value is created.
  3. A discussion on making design phases more predictable by planning with and working toward decision-based milestones rather than task-based milestones and defining criteria to be used in making durable decisions that are directly tied to the customers values. 
  4. An exploration of standardized design and how to balance the efficiency with a project’s unique values.
