Planning your Journey to LCI Congress – Go to the Gemba

How can you understand all aspects of a project without physical observation?

“Going to the Work, called Going to the Gemba in original Toyota Production System (TPS) language, is crucial to improving overall quality control and eliminating waste in the workflow process.” -- Transforming Design and Construction: A Framework for Change, Chapter 33, pg. 191

Going to the Gemba, also called a Gemba Walk, uncovers opportunities for continuous improvement, and the two Gemba Trainings offered twice on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at the 2017 LCI Congress will introduce participants to the basics. Through customized videos, discussion and interactive group exercises, participants will leave with a better understanding of value streams and how to bridge the gap between management, planning and the frontline work. Apply what you’ve learned from your Gemba Training to one of three available off-site Gemba Walks offered Friday, Oct. 20 in the Anaheim, Calif., area! Note: bus transportation is provided and closed-toe shoes are required. The host will provide all other PPE (personal protective equipment).

  • Southland Industries/Envise Shop Tour – See how Southland integrates Lean principles into the design-build processes and prefabrication shop.
  • KHS&S Prefabrication Shop Part II – Observe, then offer feedback for how KHS&S can provide more value through framing and drywall prefabrication.
  • LAX Midfield Satellite Concourse North (MSC) - Work alongside the team of 350+ office and field staff using Lean thinking to manage the challenges of the $1.3B Midfield Satellite Concourse at LAX Airport.
  • Toyota Motor North America (SOLD OUT) Participants will tour the Big Room, dashboards and production line at this San Pedro Toyota plant representing TPS.

Add the Gemba Trainings and a Gemba Walk to your 2017 LCI Congress registration and register by Sep. 8 to save before rates increase and more reach capacity! If you’ve already registered and would like to add a Gemba Walk to your registration, email Carolyn Martin,
