Words of Wisdom

From: "Values" in, The Owner’s Dilemma, Barbara White Bryson, 2010, pp. 121-22: If an owner wants a team that will be creative, productive, and effective, he or she must lead with exuberance and caring consideration. It is up to the owner to make the project process unique and exciting for the project team…Consistent management of the project team is critical. This consistency must be inherent to everything from invoice payment (Pay on time…every time!) to participation in project meetings. An effective team relies on the owner to manage in a manner that is reasonably predictable….Finally, the owner should manage cooperatively, acting as a service provider to every project team member.

For LCI Members Only

Two significant new sets of resources are now available on the LCI website for use by our members. The LCI homepage now has buttons on the right hand side labelled “Last Planner® System” and “Knowledge Transfer Learning Library.” The former button will take you to a set of documents produced by the LCI Standards Committee to help members with Last Planner® implementation. The “Knowledge Transfer” button links to a members-only section with 23 papers describing and offering advice on selected topics in Lean implementation from the perspective of over 15 practitioners who met in Dallas in December and generated these materials for LCI. We encourage you to check them out. If you are not currently a member of LCI, access to these materials would be an excellent justification for your firm to join now.

ENR Cites Surveys on IPD and Benefits Integrated Building Teams

The February 23 ENR publication contains an article on project delivery methods, including Integrated Project Delivery, based on the results of an industry survey by Dodge Analytics. Awareness of IPD was seen to be largely contingent on firm size, with 40% of firms with more than 50 employees indicating familiarity, compared to only 9% of firms under 50 employees. Almost half of the larger firms (47%) also believe the use of IPD will expand in the coming three years. Among owner respondents, only 23% professed familiarity with IPD, but these cited such benefits as increased quality and efficiency, reduced litigation risk, and lower overall project performance costs. With well over half of owners having little or no familiarity with IPD, the article suggests IPD advocates have a significant educational effort on their hands to increase owner awareness and pave the way for more owners to specify its use on projects. See Which Project Delivery System Yields the Best Results? In the same issue of ENR, results of a Pankow Foundation study (Owner’s Guide to Maximizing Success in Integrated Projects) are highlighted, including the findings that team integration and cohesion are better success indicators for project work than any specific delivery method, and good outcomes are not delivery-strategy dependent.
