Words of Wisdom

From: "The Mindset of an Effective Big Room," LCI Knowledge Transfer papers, accessible to LCI members at https://www.leanconstruc
tion.org/learning-
laboratory-preview

The Big Room is about fostering behaviors that lead to high levels of collaboration and thus to high-performing teams. Although forming a Big Room requires a significant investment of time and money, when conducted well the Big Room adds value to the project and drives down the overall project cost. Teams rapidly advance work in a relatively short amount of time with less rework because they have the collective brainpower in the room working together. Having a well-established, effectively facilitated agenda is crucial to a Big Room's productivity and efficiency.

LCI Members: Don't Forget to Check Out the Lean "Knowledge Transfer" Papers on our Website

If you have not done so as yet, you are missing a major opportunity to benefit from the collective knowledge of 20+ Lean practitioners who have gathered twice since last fall to contribute their expertise to the development of brief papers on a wide range of Lean-related topics. Utilizing their advice will definitely help you and your organization in furthering your Lean journey. We also are soliciting your feedback to help us make them better over time. Topics are organized under four major categories of Transformational Change, Integrated Project Delivery & Strategy, Lean Project Delivery Systems, and Lean Project Management & Tools. LCI Education Committee Update

Our committee has been working hard through 2015 to develop new training materials in some key areas. We will roll these out at the Congress this year, or shortly thereafter. A new "Intro to Lean" course and webinar, a Target Value Design (TVD) program, and training materials for the trade crafts are all on the agenda for this year. We have contracted with a professional curriculum design firm for the first time this year, and with their help we anticipate creating a more common "look and feel" for our materials. They also are helping us identify and meet specific learning objectives for each course, plus standardized approaches to developing instructors' and participants' guides for each training session.

LCI Embarks on a Major Research Project with UMN

LCI has agreed to fund a University of Minnesota research proposal looking at the benefits of using IPD, Lean and BIM on projects. The research will be based on in-depth case studies of 11 IPD projects across the country. It seeks to analyze and document how Lean and other collaborative approaches improve value in the building industry by promoting better project outcomes. It will identify and complement existing anecdotal evidence along these lines through the development of metrics and other evidence of its effectiveness. The study will run from later this year through the first three quarters of 2016, with the goal of having reportable findings by the time of the LCI annual Congress meeting in Chicago in 2016. We will continue to keep you up to date on the study as it progresses.

National Webinars:

A Lean Coach's Analysis of Last Planner® Successes and Failures

Don't miss it as Dan Fauchier, from the ReAlignment Group of California, LLC, affiliated with Umstot Project Facilities and Solutions, will discuss how a dozen or more project teams (design and construction, current and past) have implemented Last Planner System™ (LPS), the triumphs and stumbles, the pitfalls and challenges, on a variety of project types (schools, hospitals, prisons, commercial, residential). He will share case histories, show photos, demonstrate his energetic 15 minute kickoff explanation of LPS (it will give you some ideas on tightly coupling learning with action), give tips on facilitating LPS sessions, and take lots of questions. National Seminars:

August 10, 2015 – 8:00 am – 5:00 pm EDT
Choosing by Advantages – LCI Carolinas CoP, Kohn Koga, Boldt

Choosing by Advantages (CBA) is recognized within the Lean community as the best decision making system for use during project delivery. LCI Carolinas is sponsoring this introduction of Boldt’s peer-reviewed CBA training for project teams, condensing two days of training into one full day of instruction and hands on activities. CBA enhances project team culture, assists in collaborative decision making, and the lessons are applicable for all projects (and at home!). The definitions, principles, models and methods are consistent with Jim Suhr’s standards for CBA. You will learn together as a team creating and reporting solutions.

A booklet of slides and the updated 3-volume set of Jim Suhr’s books is yours to keep. It is not necessary to read any materials prior to the seminar. Boldt will share their spreadsheets with you. At least one person on each team should have a notebook computer for the last exercise.

Intermediate Lean Design & Construction Workshop – NorCal CoP, David MacNeel, OnPoint Lean Consulting

Join the NorCal CoP and host XL Construction for an exploration of Lean principles and their application to the design and construction of capital projects. Through various exercises, simulations, and lecture, participants will review the essentials of Lean and get an introduction to the various tools and processes that are making projects significantly safer, faster, and cost less than traditional delivery.

This program is intended for individuals who may have attended an LCI Intro to Lean in the past or are currently utilizing Lean tools on projects. This workshop will focus on application of Lean tools. Time will be allocated for discussion of the participant’s questions as well as the problems they face with implementation. Come prepared to share your successes and failures with the class.

Community of Practice (CoP) Corner

Hello CoPs. Congress is coming up soon and there are a lot of things to get ready for. The first is the meeting which will be held Tuesday, October 13, 2015 from 12-5 (lunch will be provided) location to be announced at a later time closer to the conference. We will discuss CoP self-assessment, beset practices as well as have a special presentation by the Education Committee and David Craft about the new procedures for becoming an LCI "approved" consultant. Please plan to arrive early enough at Congress to attend the meeting which is open to CoP Chairs or their delegates only.

The Communities of Practice will have a table at Congress this year to explain what they are and have collateral to show attendees what the different CoPs hope to accomplish in their markets. If you would like to have collateral on the table, please contact Ilene Goldberg for particulars and deadlines to have materials ready for Congress.
