Words of Wisdom

From: "The Mindset of an Effective Big Room," LCI Knowledge Transfer papers, accessible to LCI members at https://www.leanconstruc

Effective leaders know that they must resolve tension from competing concerns. On the one hand, they must invite, encourage and "push" reluctant team members in directions they might rather avoid. On the other hand, effective leaders will continue to listen to all of their team members and learn from their opinions and objections. A strong leader will encourage concise A3 thinking and the use of analytical thinking tools like Choosing by Advantages.

LCI-Supported Research Project at UMN to Study IPD and Lean

LCI has just signed on to sponsor a significant new research program spearheaded by the University of Minnesota. This case study effort is the first to take an in-depth look exclusively at Lean and Integrated Project Delivery projects focusing on team practices and outcomes that meet owners' objectives. It is anticipated that the findings of this study will support the use of Integrated Project Delivery and Lean processes on future projects. The study team is now soliciting candidate projects for consideration, and you are invited to submit projects for potential inclusion in the study. Please click through to the attached one-pager, which gives more info. Thanks in advance for your interest and support.

New Survey Seeks to Track Owner Satisfaction with Project Delivery

In our ongoing effort to better understand the level of satisfaction with project work across the owner community, we have commissioned Dodge Analytics to help us conduct a new industry satisfaction survey. We believe such a survey is needed to gauge the level of success of Integrated Project Delivery, Lean tools and techniques, and related aspects of collaborative systems of project delivery. If you represent an owner organization and have not as yet been asked to take the survey but would like to have your response included, please let us know by emailing (If you are a designer or contractor who could help us reach out to your owner clients to take the survey, please let us know as well.) The survey instrument can be completed in about 15 minutes. In addition to helping us develop metrics on whether collaborative projects promote improved satisfaction, participants will receive a copy of the overall study findings, along with their own responses for reference. However, participation will remain completely confidential.

Reminder: Knowledge Transfer Papers Available to Members on the LCI Website

The set of Knowledge Transfer papers authored for LCI by Lean practitioners in recent months are in the process of being updated with additional content, so be sure to check back often to see the additional topics becoming available. These papers provide an outstanding compendium of best practices and practical implementation tips. They will definitely help you progress in your Lean journey as you distribute them to teams for discussion and implementation. In addition, we plan to publish these materials in book form for distribution at Congress this year. We also solicit your ongoing feedback if you have comments or suggestions for improvement.

At Congress this year on October 14th, there will be a Corporate Member’s only networking opportunity at the Harpoon Brewery, offsite at 306 Northern Avenue. A Boston landmark, Harpoon was started by three friends who found the beer choices at the time to be limited. In June of 1987 a warehouse space on the Boston waterfront was transformed into a brewery and the first Harpoon Ale was brewed. Come and enjoy the beer, appetizers, and tours of the brewery itself. The price is $60 and space is limited so make your reservation today!
