The Four Steps to LCI Certification
What are your personal and/or professional development goals? Why not make obtaining the LCI-CPC and/or LCI-CPD one of those goals? Earning LCI’s certifications are great professional development milestones for 2024/2025. By earning a certification from LCI you continue to build and demonstrate you and your company’s credibility and commitment to practicing Lean.
Where should you start?
- Step One: Become a Lean learner – start with understanding the foundation of Lean design and construction by building your awareness of the six tenets of Lean. A good place to start your Lean journey is by taking LCI eLearning courses.
- Step Two: Start applying what you learned and engage in your local Communities of Practice – share and learn by collaborating with local peers.
- Step Three: Be seen as a Lean champion within your organization and foster an environment of continuous improvement – lead the charge!
Step Four: Gain 3+ years of practical Lean experience and start the process to obtain the LCI-CPC and/or LCI-CPD.

2024 Lean in Design Forum Recap
On May 1-2 over 190 attendees gathered for LCI’s annual design focused forum in Chicago. This professional development event featured keynote speaker Michael Chapman who spoke on Design Thinking.
Key takeaways from keynote speaker Michael Chapman:
- Being thoughtful from the start can stop costly, avoidable mistakes later
- Be an anthropologist, be curious
- Design thinking can’t solve the problem if you don’t collect the information and synthesize it before you design
The design focused event is something we are very proud to host annually with the intention of empowering designers to pursue design excellence through the use of Lean approaches and methods.

The Missing Element in LPS®: Project Level Planning
Georgia CoP enjoys robust discussion topics at Lean Coffee
On April 26, the LCI Georgia Community of Practice (CoP) held a monthly Lean Coffee hosted at the office of LCI corporate member, The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company and facilitated by Valeh Nowrouzian who serves as the CoP Events Leader. While the group for this event was small, the discussions were robust on several significant topics that included:
- The importance of kick starting the conversation with all stakeholders (owners and trade partners included!) and involving everyone early on by having them at the same table, which creates the environment for relations and trust to be built on the same foundation to accelerate solution development when responding to project challenges and setbacks as they arise.
- Brainstorming solutions on how CM firms can work with trade partners to implement Lean tools. Amending bid packages and contracts to encourage Lean tools such as prefabrication were part of the discussion.
- Exploring the workforce crisis and how to work together to address challenges that include dwindling numbers of skilled tradespersons and potential ways to attract people to the construction industry.
Lean Coffee events provide an opportunity to offer topics for discussion that are top of mind and explore possible countermeasures amongst peers. Early Stakeholder Involvement
In the traditional construction project delivery model, teams operate in silos with separate contracts, leading to inefficiencies and waste. While it may seem convenient for owners wanting control, this approach stifles collaboration and incentivizes decisions benefiting individual teams rather than the project’s overall success. Consequently, projects often exceed deadlines and budgets. Breaking free from this silo mentality is crucial for improving outcomes in the construction industry.
