4 Common Lean Design & Construction Misconceptions (And What Lean Really Looks Like)

“We can effectively implement the tools of the Last Planner System, but if we don’t have psychological safety within a space and no one can make a reliable commitment, then the Last Planner System itself falls apart.”

Misconception #2: Lean Slows Projects Down

Instead of discovering constructability issues after design is complete, Lean practices encourage project teams to identify challenges while solutions are still inexpensive and changes have less negative impact

“By understanding at the heart of what the value is for each of those customers, we’re able to deliver something that’s above and beyond what traditional management would offer.”
Lean does require intentional planning upfront. That investment often reduces rework, improves coordination, and creates more predictable project outcomes.
Misconception #3: Lean Is Only for Contractors
Although Lean project delivery practices are implemented mainly by the GC/CM on a project, they should be deployed by every stakeholder.
Owners, architects, engineers, designers, contractors, and trade partners all have a role to play.

Henry Nutt believes Respect for People has the power to transform the industry.
“People being encouraged, people being excited about coming to work, people being more innovative and creative in how to solve problems because they’re not bombarded by someone berating them.”
When people feel respected, they are more willing to share ideas, solve problems, and help one another succeed.
Jennifer Lacy of Robins & Morton believes this people-first mindset is the foundation of Lean.
“The core of Lean is Respect for People.”
She explains that Lean is not simply about eliminating waste. It is about creating project environments where people can do their best work while improving safety, collaboration, and well-being.
Better schedules are one result of Lean. They are not the purpose of Lean.
