Choosing by Advantages (CBA) helps teams focus on the importance of real advantages to make sound decisions. This interactive cohort will help you ask better questions, guide more productive conversations, and apply CBA thinking to decisions in your own work.

Three Things to Remember

• CBA is a way of thinking. Learn the principles behind sound decision-making and apply them beyond a single form, spreadsheet, or workshop.
• Not every decision needs the Tabular Method. Practice simpler CBA methods and explore how the same principles support a more structured approach to complex decisions.
• You will practice, not just listen. Learn, unlearn, relearn, and apply through guided examples, collaborative exercises, and real decisions from your work.

What You Will Learn Each Week

Week 1: Foundations of Sound Decision-Making Learn why the method used to make a decision matters. You will examine common decision habits that create weak outcomes, learn the core CBA vocabulary, and begin distinguishing factors, attributes, and advantages.

Week 2: Choosing the Right Method Move beyond the idea that every CBA decision requires a spreadsheet. You will work with simpler CBA methods, learn how to establish importance, and understand how to match the method to the complexity of the decision.

Week 3: Putting Sound Decision-Making into Practice Practice helping a group move from individual preferences to a shared understanding of what matters. You will apply simpler CBA methods, distinguish attributes from advantages, and discuss the importance of advantages. Collaborative exercises will help you ask better questions, surface assumptions, and navigate different perspectives.

Week 4: Introduction to the Tabular Method Explore how sound decision-making supports the CBA Tabular Method for decisions involving multiple alternatives and factors. A guided example will show how alternatives, factors, criteria, attributes, advantages, and importance fit together, and how cost enters the decision. You will build an understanding of the method’s structure and the thinking behind it as a foundation for further practice.

What to Expect

This is a working cohort. Each week combines instruction, discussion, practice, and application. You will collaborate with other project professionals, examine your current decision-making habits, and bring a real decision from your work into the learning process. Between sessions, you will apply what you learn so each week builds on the last. After each two-hour session, you can stay for 30 minutes of optional questions, discussion, and collaboration with the instructor and cohort.
