Member Connections: PDCA: It’s time to “Act”

If you’re new to Lean, the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle is a perfect way to get familiar with Lean concepts through a simple, structured procedure that will help you improve your Lean implementation inside your organization.

The final step of this four-part plan is to “Act” on what you’ve learned from the “Check” phase of the cycle.

If the implementation plan, strategy or action were successful in achieving the goals or closing the gap to your ideal state, then the next step is to standardize.

For an in-depth, step-by-step walkthrough on the PDCA cycle – including valuable resources to drive your organizational Lean journey – check out LCI’s new guide for LCI corporate members: Getting Started With Lean: A Guide for Organizations New to Lean. In it, you’ll find valuable resources such as an A3 template, a 52-week suggested Lean stand-up schedule, and more!

Meet a CoP Participant: Keyan Zandy (Dallas/Fort Worth)

Meet Keyan Zandy, Chief Executive Officer at Skiles Group and longtime Core Group member of the Dallas/Fort Worth Community of Practice.

With more than 15 years of involvement in the Lean community, Keyan brings deep experience and heartfelt commitment to evolving the construction industry. He was honored with the 2023 LCI Pioneer Award for his leadership and impact.

For Keyan, Lean is about more than tools or tactics – it’s about building trust, fostering growth, and leading with empathy.

Why he joined his CoP:
“I joined the Community of Practice to connect with others who were serious about changing the construction industry. Lean isn’t something that can be learned in a vacuum – it takes shared experience, honest dialogue, and a willingness to grow. This community provides all of that.”

Favorite CoP Event:
“A standout for me was “Lean on the Front Line,” a panel featuring superintendents sharing their real-world experiences with Lean in the field. Hearing them speak so honestly – about what works, what’s hard, and how they lead their teams – was incredibly powerful. These are the people driving Lean every day, and seeing their voices elevated in that setting felt like a long-overdue recognition of their leadership.”

How it’s helped his career:
“Being part of the Community of Practice has sharpened how I lead and how I listen, reinforcing that Lean is about people, not just process. The conversations and relationships I’ve built here have helped me lead with more empathy, stay grounded in purpose, and keep pushing for a healthier, more collaborative industry.”

Biggest Lean challenge:
“The biggest challenge has been helping teams move beyond surface-level adoption. Lean is more than daily huddles and dashboards. For those things to be effective, they have to exist in an environment where everyone feels safe to speak up, address issues, and take ownership. Creating that environment is significantly more challenging and requires more intentional effort than simply implementing the tools.”

Biggest Lean success story:
“My biggest Lean success has been the transformation of Skiles Group. We were a well-established firm when I stepped into leadership, but we hadn’t yet embraced Lean. Instead of outsourcing change, we built it from the inside – developing field leaders, nurturing internal champions, and aligning our operations with Lean values. That shift has changed everything: how we deliver projects, how we support our people, and how we’re viewed in the industry. The cultural growth has fueled broader success, not just in how we build, but in who we’ve become.”

Advice to newcomers:
“If you’re leading in the field, your influence matters more than you think. You don’t need to be an expert in Lean to make a difference, you just need to be open. Begin by creating an environment where your team feels comfortable speaking up and demonstrating your willingness to improve alongside them. Lean is not about having a flawless system; it’s about showing up every day with the intention of making things better.”

What he’s most excited about:
“The core principle of Lean has always been ‘Respect for People,’ and I find it exciting to see the industry evolve into something more human-centered. I observe teams forming stronger relationships, leaders focusing on well-being, and job site cultures becoming more open and supportive. Lean is moving us beyond mere efficiency and fostering a more meaningful industry, one where people can thrive, not just survive.”

Favorite Lean Construction Institute events:
“Congress has always been my favorite LCI event. Early on, it was where I went to learn, connect, and share. Over the years, it’s become something more: now I see our team members on stage, sharing their own Lean journeys. Watching them step into those roles and contribute to the broader conversation feels like coming full circle.”
