Chicago CoP celebrates its founders at Bob Krier Award Night
On April 18, the LCI Chicago Community of Practice (CoP) hosted the 5th Annual Bob Krier Award Night where it recognized its founding members for their vision and determination to stand the LCI Chicago CoP beginning in 2010. This formational group included Afshan Barshan, Leon LaJeunesse, Dr. Cindy Menches, Robert Pratt, Mark Skender, Rich Seiler, and Bob Krier.
Attendees celebrated the CoP’s history along with a “State of the Chicago CoP” update presented by each of the committee leads. Five of the founders attended, witnessing how far their initial efforts have grown and how the CoP continues to evolve to support the Lean community in the Chicagoland area. During the celebration, each received an award of recognition, including the family of Bob Krier, deceased.
The recent years, the CoP established an Academics Committee whose work now supports students at eight regional universities:
- Illinois Institute of Technology
- Northwestern University
- University of Illinois
- Purdue University
- Illinois State University
- Bradley University
- Northern Illinois University
- North Park University (Chicago)
In addition to providing ongoing collaboration with these student groups, the Academics Committee provides key events hosted by CoP member organizations providing them with real world examples to see Lean in action at facilities and projects providing them with insights they can take with them as they complete their education and enter into the industry. This sets the foundation to lead to employment within member organizations and creating the excitement around volunteering for leadership and committee roles within the CoP. This is key to sustaining the CoP as well as supporting industry change through engaging the next generation.
The Academics Committee also oversees the annual scholarship award process and because of the extraordinary support of the CoP’s Annual Golf Outing, which helps to fund the scholarships, the CoP was able to award four Bob Krier Scholarships and one Tim Vander Molen scholarship of $2,500 each. We were thrilled to have the 2023 recipients in attendance to acknowledge their success! Congratulations and best wishes are extended our winners:
- Kate Benhart, Purdue University, majoring in Construction Management Technology
- Filip Kopec, Northern Illinois University, majoring in Mechanical Engineering
- German Laiton, Illinois Institute of Technology, majoring in Civil Engineering
- Akheel Abbas Sharifali, Illinois Institute of Technology, majoring in Construction Engineering and Management
- Kayla Shen, Northwestern University, majoring in Environmental Engineering
Concluding the evening was the presentation of the 2024 Bob Krier award to Timothy Vander Molen (Ret.), Integrated Facilities Solutions. At Tim’s leadership and direction, along with his emphasis on lifelong learning, IFS has developed proven processes to improve team collaboration, provide positive project controls and enhanced communication. Based on the principles of Lean project management, the IFS Way has been proven in practice for more than 20 years.
Congratulations to the entire Chicago CoP for this annual celebration of all that embodies LCI’s mission!

Conditions of Satisfaction are an explicit description by a customer of all the actual requirements that must be satisfied by the performer in order for the customer to feel that he or she received exactly what was wanted. In design and construction, the “customer” is the owner of the project.
