Inclusive Pathways to Success (IPS) Launches New Program for January 2025

Inclusive Pathways to Success (IPS) is a nonprofit trade school whose mission is to empower young adults (ages 21-36) with differing abilities. Located in the D.C. Metro area, IPS aims to build a robust talent pipeline for the skilled trades, serving as a steadfast ally for those with differing abilities who have historically faced underemployment. By using the term “differing abilities,” IPS emphasizes its commitment to addressing the unique educational needs of this demographic.

The primary goal of IPS is to connect students with meaningful employment opportunities in the construction industry. Through tailored job training, IPS equips students with the skills they need to thrive in the workforce while simultaneously addressing the needs of employers seeking a skilled labor force.

Since its inception, IPS has conducted various short-term programs, including a successful month-long pilot program in 2022 that focused on woodworking workshops. These initiatives have fostered workplace readiness and social skills among participants, resulting in significant personal and professional growth for a dozen students over the past two years.

“IPS is a one-of-a-kind organization. Nobody is doing what we are doing right now, and we hope to grow in the years to come,” says Naina Narayana Chernoff, IPS Founder and CEO.

Exciting Developments Ahead

In January 2025, IPS will launch a five-month training program designed to teach basic construction skills. With a focus on small group learning, this program will accommodate 5-6 students daily from 9 AM to 4 PM. Participants will engage the National Center for Construction Education & Research (NCCER) CORE program, focusing on basic construction and concrete skills for entry-level work

The rigorous application process ensures that applicants are well-suited for the program, with assessments conducted by a trade instructor and an occupational therapist. The curriculum will not only cover technical skills—such as equipment operation and safety protocols, but also essential soft skills that promote long-term employment success. These include effective communication, self-advocacy, and problem-solving.

Upon successful completion, students will earn certifications in OSHA 10 and First Aid/CPR/AED, enhancing their employability and workplace readiness.

Emphasizing Holistic Development

IPS recognizes the importance of soft skills in the workplace. The program will teach students social skills, professionalism, and empathy through role-playing exercises and real-world job site visits. This experiential learning approach allows students to practice their skills in a supportive environment.

Mental health and wellness are also central to the IPS curriculum. The organization has spoken with employer partners about the mental health challenges many employees face and incorporates mindfulness practices, coping strategies, and professional conduct during difficult times into its training.

How Can Construction Companies Get Involved?

IPS seeks to build partnerships with employers interested in hiring individuals with differing abilities. By highlighting the untapped potential of this demographic, IPS aims to foster relationships with firms that appreciate the significant contributions these individuals can make.

To support students beyond graduation, IPS will host monthly alumni meetings for each cohort, facilitating ongoing learning and connection. Maintaining strong relationships with employers is essential for addressing challenges and enhancing student development even after employment.

Construction companies are encouraged to participate by allowing IPS to visit job sites, creating opportunities for students and employers to connect and break down barriers.
