LCI Chicago Community of Practice - Honoring Lean Innovators in Design and Construction

Each year, the LCI Chicago Community of Practice gathers to honor the spirit and legacy of Lean innovation in our industry with the Bob Krier Award—named in memory of one of our CoP’s founding members. This award celebrates individuals and teams who are transforming how we design and build—through collaboration, continuous improvement, and a deep respect for people.

Celebrating Excellence in Lean
Award recipients are selected based on a set of criteria that reflect the very heart of Lean:

  • Implementation
Demonstrating significant achievements in promoting Lean tools and techniques within their organization or across the industry. This includes deep personal investment in bringing Lean principles to life on key projects for contractors, designers, and owners alike.
  • Innovation
Pioneering the development and deployment of new Lean tools and methods that improve project design and delivery.
  • Impact on the Community
Championing the mission and goals of the Lean Construction Institute through leadership, education, and advocacy. These leaders freely share lessons learned, present at conferences and seminars, and help guide others—especially owners—in embracing Lean.

Honoring Two Visionaries
On May 28, 2025, the Chicago CoP came together for the annual Bob Krier Award event—a meaningful evening not only to remember Bob’s contributions, but also to honor another founding force, Mark Skender, whose legacy continues to shape our community.

Together, we reflected on the past—and looked forward with inspiration—as we celebrated the 2025 Bob Krier Award recipient: Peter Messina, Vice President of Planning at Advocate Health.

Embodying the Spirit of Lean
In honoring Peter Messina, the LCI Chicago CoP celebrates not just a portfolio of remarkable projects, but a mindset of growth, humility, and collaboration. Peter embodies the same spirit of continuous improvement that Bob Krier championed—proof that Lean is not just a set of tools, but a way of thinking, building, and leading.

LCI Congratulates Peter Messina and we thank him for his inspirational leadership.

Member Connections: Getting Started With Lean: A Guide for Organizations New to Lean

LCI corporate members: a newly created resource, Getting Started With Lean: A Guide for Organizations New to Lean, is now available to you in the Member Hub. This guide focuses on the basics of the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle and offers exclusive new resources, including an A3 template, a 52-week suggested Lean stand-up schedule, and more!

The PDCA cycle is a continuous improvement methodology that helps organizations systematically implement Lean principles at any stage of their journey.

PDCA is referred to as a “cycle” because in Lean, we are always seeking ways to improve our processes. The structure of the cycle facilitates this continuous growth.

Important Reminder: Credit Card Surcharge for Dues Payments

Please note that a 3% surcharge applies to all dues payments made by credit card, including those made by one-time use credit cards. LCI reluctantly implemented this fee in 2025 due to the rising costs from our credit card processor. To avoid the surcharge, members are welcome to pay by ACH, EFT, or check. As you prepare for budgeting your 2026 dues, please remember to account for the 3% processing fee if you will be using a credit card for payment. Your understanding and continued support of LCI is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, please reach out to Shannyn Heyer.
