A3 Thinking – Practical Guide to Problem-Solving

A3 Lean Thinking Training is an interactive workshop that teaches participants how to apply Lean problem-solving principles using the A3 methodology. Originating from the Toyota Production System, A3 Thinking provides a structured, one-page approach to identifying problems, analyzing root causes, developing countermeasures, and implementing sustainable solutions.

During this session, participants will learn how to:

• Understand the principles of Lean thinking and continuous improvement.
• Define and clearly articulate business problems.
• Use data and observation to analyze current conditions.
• Apply root cause analysis techniques such as the 5 Whys.
• Develop effective countermeasures and action plans.
• Communicate problem-solving efforts using the A3 framework.
• Foster collaboration, critical thinking, and accountability within teams.

The training combines Lean theory with practical exercises, case studies, and hands-on application of the A3 template, enabling participants to confidently lead improvement initiatives and drive operational excellence in their organizations.

Instructor:

LaShira Champion King is Quality Lean & Innovation Director at Walbridge. She is dedicated to improving project delivery, helping many construction project teams adopt the continual improvement mindset. She shares her knowledge and experience in providing value while minimizing waste. With over 20 years of experience, she is enthusiastic about helping people transform to make their project delivery excellent.  LaShira is a member of the Core Team for the LCEP CM-Lean 2.0 and a Core Team Member of the LCI Michigan CoP.
