Communities of Practice: How to Ask Great Questions on a Gemba Walk
A Gemba Walk is one of the most powerful tools in Lean Construction—but only if you ask the right questions.
A quick refresher:
- Gemba means “where the work happens.”
- The goal is to observe, engage, and improve—not to micromanage or dictate.
- The 3 P’s of Gemba (Purpose, Process, People) guide the walk.
So, how do you ensure your questions lead to meaningful insights rather than just small talk?
- Ask open-ended questions. Avoid yes/no questions—instead ask questions that start with “what,” “why,” and “how.”
- Focus on flow. How does work transition between trades? Where does inefficiency create rework?
- Empower the people doing the work. What challenges do they face? What would make their job easier?
The best Gemba Walks aren’t just about observation—they’re about fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
Want to dive deeper? Join LCI’s March 27 webinar, “Integrating Gemba Walks for Continuous Improvement”, led by Eric Lusis of Aecon Construction Group Inc.

Mastering the Capabilities Assessment: Tips from an LCI-CPC Certificant
The Capabilities Assessment is the final step in earning your LCI Certification, and a little strategy can go a long way. Watch this video from Andy Fulton, a Lean Implementation Coach with Construction Accelerator and LCI-CPC certificant, as he shares practical tips to help you stay on track.
One key takeaway? Dedicate just one hour every Friday to working on your assessment to make steady progress without feeling overwhelmed. Another simple habit: start collecting artifacts early so you have strong examples to draw from when completing your responses.
If you’re working toward certification, these small steps can make a big difference. Apply today and put these tips into action!
